Getting better Wi-Fi around your home or office

Where to put your router, what slows Wi-Fi down, and when a mesh system is worth it.

Your connection speed and your Wi-Fi speed are two different things. A fast connection can still feel slow if the Wi-Fi cannot get through your building.

Put the router out in the open, at about waist height, roughly central to where you use it. Cupboards, floors, brick walls, mirrors, fish tanks and metal shelving all cut the signal noticeably.

Keep it away from microwaves, cordless phone bases and baby monitors, which sit in the same frequency range.

Use the 5GHz network for devices in the same room as the router, and the 2.4GHz network for devices further away. 5GHz is faster but travels less far.

If you have thick walls, multiple storeys or a long building, no single router will cover it well. A mesh system with two or three units is the fix. Ask us for a recommendation that suits your plan and building.
